MANDY, INDIANA BOTTLE EPISODE

Daniel Avery's brooding remix of Mandy, Indiana's abrasive original 'Alien 3' got us in the mood the dance just over a month ago (see List Pick here). Now, the Manchester noise-enthusiasts have shared another sultry cut that toes the line between experimental guitar music and throbbing electronica. Delivered in French, vocalist Valentine Caulfield's first language, there's a touch of Battles' tumbling 'Atlas' to 'Bottle Episode'. Distinctively darker in nature, militant drums roll in a roomy space, sounding like they could have been recorded in a vast, abandoned warehouse. Glassy sound effects add to the industrial feel of the piece before seesawing guitar lines, reminiscent of the mighty Girl Band, provide tension and release. Speaking of the track Caulfield said: “I wanted to build up on the military style of the track, but in a very slow crescendo, and not in a very obvious way. The lyrics talk of men waiting, moving forward; war is never mentioned, yet it is obvious that the men are waiting for death. The song ends with the men almost dancing as the bullets hit them.” (Photo by Holly Whitaker). -Holly Mullineaux
